Exciting news in the fine art world coming out of our Renton showroom!!
The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) has selected the work of our Renton showroom manager, Kate Jessup to be included in this year’s Mosaic Arts International 2010. This is an annual juried exhibition of members’ outstanding work, which unites compelling materials, innovative design, and masterful technique. It will take place in Chicago during March and April, to coincide with the American Mosaic Summit. The Smith Museum of Stained Glass at Navy Pier will host the show, and over 80,000 visitors are expected to attend during its run from March 1-April 30. The exhibition is considered to be the year’s most significant display of international contemporary mosaic fine art.
Kate received additional honors when her piece was voted by a panel of esteemed artists and curators as the best in show for the 3-D works category!
Karen Ami, SAMA president and exhibition chair, notes that “MAI has become the most competitive mosaic arts exhibition in the U.S. This year’s show will inspire and excite those who are familiar with mosaic as well as those seeing contemporary mosaic art for the first time.” More than 250 artists from eight countries submitted entries, and only 48 pieces were ultimately selected for exhibition.
Kate’s piece, titled “Cedar Stump”, was sculpted from dense foam-core. The top was then covered with mahogany veneer and clear glass. The body is a combination of stained glass, Crossville Glass Blox and Walker Zanger Spa Glass. It is grouted with Laticrete Permacolor #66 Chestnut Brown.
This month Kate travels to Chicago to receive her award and celebrate the opening of the museum exhibition. Congratulations, Kate!
